1967 Going fishing and catching a shark

My cousin Malcolm Cook had a sixteen foot boat that he had made himself from plywood which he then coated with fibreglass. One summer I went fishing with him as he put out a shark line and then the following day when he would haul in any fish that had been caught. Another time I went with him and two others out from Myalup Beach on a gorgeous sunny day. As we charged across the surface we passed a hammerhead shark on the surface. We got to a spot where it was thought we could catch a fish. The water was as clear as glass and we could see the bottom. The lines we had were all suited to catching big fish, with large sinkers on the end. I think the bait was smaller fish we had caught earlier. We were all on the same side of the boat. The lines were all in the water with the sinkers and bait making a row in the water. We watched as a shark came up to the bait on the far end from me. I was on the other end. No one moved. It moved from the first bait to the second. It had not tried to eat either. As it headed for the third I let my line go. The heavy sinker meant that it plummeted towards the bottom. Instantly the shark was after it and caught on the large hook I was using. I hauled it in. Then we had a live shark a bit less than a metre long in the boat. Big problem for me but my cousin had no problem despatching it.
